Mother and partner
So the Moon has two functions (see also text 18.3). These two sides can be recognized in the distinction between Self-directed and non-Self-directed processes, but also in the two roles of women.
The Full Moon serves the life processes in Nature. This is woman in her role as mother. For this function, the Moon mainly works with the three outer planets.
In her other function, woman emerges as partner. Here she is not the nourisher and protectress, but the opponent. In her role as opponent, too, the Moon can work with the three outer planets. She then still works in a reactive way (possibly supported by the planets beyond Saturn). But here, from a New Moon position, her feminine quality can also be supported by the three inner planets. So this feminine role involves other qualities that have a more lasting impact.
Authenticity
In her role as opponent, the Moon is more true to herself. She does not operate re-actively, but reveals herself as rooted within her own source, to which she consciously attunes herself. Relying on her own observations that are founded on the three inner planets, she takes a polar stance opposite the Saturnian Self, without wishing to nullify it.
This opposing function revolves around mutual mirroring as well as each person’s individuality. We are opened up and seen for what we are. The interpretation of one’s horoscope, through this mirror function, may have a similar effect.
The image of man and woman
There is no qualitative judgement implied here regarding men and women. In a physical-biological sense, there is no difference between women and men in their capacity to base their functioning on the inner planets. However, it is often the psychological process of the woman that keeps the Moon moving in a partner relationship. These movements express themselves in images, attachments and conditionings, in other words, in the realms where the Self also dwells. Yet even in this respect, the difference between the sexes can be surprisingly small.
In general, we may say that the Moon in the horoscope of a woman reveals information about her feminine functioning as mother and/or opponent.
In a male horoscope, the Moon reveals information about the man’s attitude towards the feminine in general and about the sensitivity of his Lunar membrane in particular.
